Yuzvendra Singh Chahal was born on July 23, 1990, in a small town called Jind, located in the state of Haryana, India. He grew up in a middle-class family. His father, K.K. Chahal, worked as an advocate (lawyer), while his mother, Sunita Devi, was a homemaker. Yuzvendra has two elder sisters. He studied at DAV Public School in Jind. From childhood, Chahal was good at both chess and cricket. In fact, when he was young, he became India’s national junior chess champion under 12 years old and even played in an international chess competition in 2003. But playing chess professionally was expensive, and he found it difficult to get support, so he decided to focus on cricket instead.

This early interest in chess helped Chahal develop patience and could “read” the minds of cricket players which turned out very useful in his bowling career. He started as a medium-fast bowler but later became a leg-spin bowler, which is a special style in cricket. His favorite cricket player and role model is Shane Warne, a famous Australian leg-spinner. He also loves watching cricket stars like Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, and Kevin Pietersen.

Career Begins

Chahal began playing cricket seriously for the Haryana state team in 2009 when he was 19 years old. He made his first-class debut (professional level domestic cricket) in November 2009 against Madhya Pradesh. In the Under-19 Cooch Behar Trophy national tournament the same year, he took 34 wickets—a sign he was a promising talent.

His performances in domestic cricket earned him a spot in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He started with the Mumbai Indians team in 2011 but only played a few matches there. His big break came when Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) bought him in 2014. At RCB, he became a well-known spinner and a key player. Chahal took many wickets for Bangalore and was their highest wicket-taker in the 2015 IPL season.
